Winter Classic 4v4 - Rules & Scoring Procedures

General Rules:

  • Players & coaches must display good sportsmanship toward each other and the officials
  • Games are eight (8) minutes with one (1) minute between. Teams should be on deck and ready to take the field immediately. When the horn sounds, players on deck should immediately take the field while finishing teams exit the field.
  • Each team will compete with four (4) field players and one (1) goalie on the field
  • No more than two (2) coaches are permitted on the field. Each team will receive a max of two (2) coach credential/passes during check-in. All other parents and fans must stay out of the curtained areas surrounding the fields
  • Players must wear goggles and mouth guards at all times.
  • Fields are "half-court" meaning each team must clear the ball to the top of the box/free area on a change of possession (after goals, turnovers). During this time, goalies have time to switch out of cage.

Game Rules

  • Each game starts with  1 game of rock/paper/scissors to determine starting possession.
  • Substitute on the fly through the designated subbing area. The player exiting the field must be off of the field entirely before her teammate enters.
  • After a goal, free clear to the opposite team to the top of the playing field.
  • After a save, pressured clear to the opposite team. Team must clear the ball to the top of the box before attacking back at the goal.
  • After a turnover, defense must clear the ball to the top of the box before becoming attackers (at this point, goalies switch out of the cage).
  • Middle School & Youth: one (1) pass rule when a team is on offense. They must attempt one (1) pass before going to goal. A pass in the free zone/substitute area does not count towards the one (1) pass rule.
  • High School: two (2) pass rule when a team is on offense. They must complete two (2) passes before going to goal. A pass in the free zone/substitute area does not count towards the two (2) pass rule.
  • There are no 8-meter shots but a lane will be cleared. The fouling defender will go behind. If the team who has been fouled has already completed their passes, that player may go to goal. If not, they must finish the number of passes needed before shooting.
  • Three (3) second rule will be closely monitored as there is no marked 8-meter. Shooting space and dangerous follow through will be strictly enforced.
  • No checking allowed for 5 th grade division (Pool A). Modified checking (stick must be below the shoulder) for 6 th & 7th grade divisions (Pool B/C). Full checking for 8th grade (Pool D) and all high school divisions.
  • If a player receives a yellow card, she must sit out for ONE (1) minute but a sub can come back in (no man-down play). If the same player receives two (2) yellow cards in the same game, she must sit for the rest of the game.
  • No stalling is permitted. One warning will be given before a change of possession is awarded. This is at the referee's discretion.

Scoring Procedures

  • Officials will keep score and call out the score after each goal.
  • Teams will be awarded three (3) points for a WIN, two (2) points for a TIE and one (1) point for a LOSS.
  • In the event of a tie after pool play (before playoffs), the winner will be determined first by winner in head to head competition
  • If there is a three-way tie, the next tie break will be total goals against then a coin toss.

Playoff & Championship Rules

  • If there is a tie at the end of a playoff game, the official will set up a throw at the top of the box facing away from the goal for a 2v2 brave heart (2 field players and 1 goalie from each team will compete).
  • One pass must be attempted before shooting
  • All fouls are indirect during the brave heart
